Lovely read! I don’t understand “art”—and movies are art—reviews that tear down. Thank you for this refreshing angle!

Thank you so much Karin, and coming from an art background (graduated in painting and video) I am really happy to hear you are on the same page. A good constructive criticism is gold but the way hate comments and trying to destroy each others work is so toxic. There is such a broad range of opinions out there and I hope we can invite more perspectives instead of polarising and creating war dramas

100% on the same page! I’m a writer, and every piece feels like a little piece of ME, so I try very hard to remember that all films, books, essays, paintings; they’re a piece of someone who believed and tried and really gave it their all. Just because it may not be our flavour, doesn’t mean it isn’t spectacular! (Having said that, I really did enjoy Snow White despite all the hate).

Just don't take your kids to a Pokemon movie. That was painful : )

I love the article, it was very fascinating, and I loved your critique and interpretation of the film and how you related to her to a sovereignty goddess. It was very beautifully written and extremely thought-provoking. They’re really funny and ironic thing is that two weeks or so ago I also wrote my own post amount no weight but instead, I focused more on article about snow White but I instead of focused on the various archetypes and symbolism in both the movie and story. I guess great minds think alike. Lol great article and superb read. Thank you very much for this thought provoking and well laid out peace. beautifully done.

I’m so so grateful for your words, thank you very much. And can’t wait to read your post!! Was that inspired by the new movie as well or are you focusing on the older tale? I’ll have a browse through your posts this evening and take time to read

Fascinating Laura! I have read some pretty scathing reviews of it but I love your detailed insights and interpretation. Also love the thought of you going to the cinema with your notebook!! I was reluctant to allow my five-year-old daughter to see it for various reasons but perhaps I could rethink with this new lens on it, and watch it with her. (P.s. do you think it is suitable for a five-year-old? My daughter was worried about the queen!) xx

People love to have opinions and make themselves feel righteous about engaging in drama, don’t they. Well it’s still a Hollywood movie, I don’t get what people expect from those guys. Honestly for a Disney movie I think it’s wonderful. And the Grimms tales I grew up with are much scarier believe me. I remember the old movie scene with the evil Queen in her hag disguise falling off the cliff with thunder and lighting and it still etched into my bones whereas the darkness of the stories never affected me in the way movies did. So I’d be discerning with movies in general when it comes to kids, it’s powerful indoctrination through story telling and visualisation.

But if you crossed this line already with your daughter I have two questions: if she asked to watch the movie, why?

And what it is that makes her fear the Queen?

Fear is not the problem. It’s a powerful conversation to be having especially when she is voicing it already. There is meant to be fear so you can learn to deal with it.

The scary scenes are when Snow White enters the dark wood (similar to the original movie scene) and when the Queen transforms into a hag. But apart from that the ending is much better and imo suitable for kids. But again depends on your context and what she has already seen etc. Talk about it beforehand, the fears but also why she wants to watch it and how to sit with the fear when it comes up (you next to her I think is important)
